Vision & Mission

Vision & Mission

Consider recent university graduates in small towns in the Iraqi Kurdistan region who are ambitious, capable, and eager to start their professional journey. They dream of applying their skills or launching their own business. However, when searching for practical knowledge, training, or mentorship, they hit a wall: nearly all resources are available in foreign languages. The tools to advance exist, but not in the language they know best. What should be a pathway forward becomes a daily struggle to translate, adapt, and make sense of a system not built for them.

For years, many generations across the region have faced these kinds of barriers (gaps in access to language, knowledge, and learning). These challenges can leave communities feeling isolated and unable to fully shape their future. Jawtana was born from a simple but powerful idea: everyone deserves the opportunity to access knowledge, learn and thrive in the language they know best. We started with a vision of bringing down these barriers, like opening a window to a world where language, knowledge, and learning become bridges rather than walls.

From the beginning, our journey has always been about people’s lives and futures. We have seen how a story told in one’s native language can inspire pride and confidence; how access to a library or online course in Kurdish can ignite a lifelong love of learning. We have watched a teacher adapt materials into a local dialect so her students finally see themselves in their lessons. These moments are the heart of Jawtana’s story. They remind us why we do what we do to ensure no child, no adult, and no community in Kurdistan is held back by a lack of access to language, knowledge, and learning. This is the world we strive to create every day through our work.

Our Vision

Jawtana envisions a Kurdistan where inclusive access to language, knowledge, and learning empowers all people to overcome barriers and drive sustainable change in their communities. In this future, no one is left behind due to the language they speak or where they live. A farmer in a rural area can learn new techniques from guides written in Kurdish. A young girl can read storybooks and textbooks in her dialect, sparking her imagination and ambition. A group of neighbours can come together to solve local problems because they all share information freely in a familiar language. By making language, knowledge, and learning truly inclusive, we see a ripple effect of empowerment – people gain confidence, communities become more self-reliant, and positive change takes root and grows. Our vision paints a picture of Kurdistan where cultural heritage is celebrated through language and every individual has the tools to improve their life and community. It is a future where education and information are open to all, planting the seeds for lasting and sustainable development driven by the people themselves.

Our Mission

Turning this vision into reality is the mission that guides everything we do. Jawtana’s mission is to develop and promote local languages, produce and share knowledge in those languages, and provide inclusive access to learning for everyone in Kurdistan. This mission translates into concrete action. We work on developing and promoting local languages (from supporting Kurdish language education and literacy programs to preserving dialects and cultural expressions that make our heritage rich). We produce and share knowledge in those languages by creating and publishing resources that matter to our communities: whether it is children’s books, educational curricula, research articles, or online content, we make sure it is available in the languages people use every day. And critically, we focus on providing inclusive access to learning: that means building initiatives that reach everyone, whether through community learning centres, mobile libraries, digital platforms, or inclusive classrooms. We pay special attention to those who historically have had less access (rural villagers, women and girls, people with disabilities, and minority language speakers) because learning should know no boundaries.

By doing all of this, we empower individuals and communities to actively shape progress in all areas that impact them. When a person can learn in their native language, they gain more than just information. They gain confidence, identity, and a voice. An informed mother can make better decisions about her family’s health. A confident student, educated in her language, can pursue higher education and career opportunities that benefit the entire community. Neighbours who have learned together can collaborate on solving local challenges like clean water, agriculture, climate issues, or entrepreneurship. In short, our mission is about equipping the people of Kurdistan with the linguistic and educational tools they need to take charge of their future.

Our mission and vision are a living promise to the people of the region. Every project we launch, every partnership we forge, and every resource we create is driven by this guiding purpose. We believe that through persistent effort and a commitment to inclusion, the day will come when everyone in Kurdistan can fully and equally participate in all societal processes and modern life.
